The vision for Language Direct began in 2004, when Harvard alumnus ('99) Cillín Perera [kiliːn pɜr'ɛərə] developed a solution to meet the needs of a German businessman who had the challenge of finding a French teacher to visit his company in the Black Forest, Germany. Very quickly, Cillín found himself spending less and less time on his English teaching and more time developing the Language Direct concept.
From what had started as a spare-room project, Language Direct GmbH was founded in Basel, Switzerland in 2006. In just a few short years since, the company has emerged as a worldwide leader in language solutions.
The Language Direct group currently engages more than 200 employees and freelancers worldwide. The company is a true reflection of the internet generation, with a globally spread, mobile staff who all work from home offices and communicate most regularly via VoIP and IM.
Our current management team is based across seven countries, with physical meetings happening periodically around the globe. We indeed pride ourselves in being "geography-blind", with high-speed internet connections and our in-house developed technical platforms allowing us to work across traditional boundaries. The leading example of this philosophy is provided by our Founder/CEO Cillín Perera himself - in 2010 alone Cillín spent time in 22 countries, flying more than 100,000 miles and visiting clients on 5 continents.
2008 saw Language Direct branch into the corporate translation and web localization market with the formation of Language Direct Corporate Services GmbH, and 2010 brought the launch of Language Direct's ICAO Aviation Training and Testing division, as well as two new consumer products, Breakfast English™ and Room Service™ by Language Direct.
The Language Direct group remains 100% privately owned, and the vast majority of our technology is proprietary. In the short years since our foundation, we are proud to have already developed a tradition of innovation in the field of language services, and we certainly look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of this field in the years to come.
